Lorde pens heartfelt letter to celebrate her birthday as a 'newborn adult' and hints at new album

Just three years ago, a New Zealand songstress ripped through foreign charts with her debut single "Royals," which condemned the materialistic trappings of fame and became an instant rebellion anthem. The rebel has remained tight-lipped on the follow-up to her debut album, Pure Heroine, but just as she became a "newborn" adult in the early hours of her 20th birthday Monday (Nov. 7), Lorde penned a letter to her fans in a Facebook post reminiscing on her 16-year-old "glossy idiot god, princess of her childhood streets" self, and hinted a forthcoming album.

''Aside from a collaboration with Disclosure in 2015, Lorde's dark, breathy vocals haven't been laced onto new material since Pure Heroine, which she said "was my way of enshrining our teenage glory, putting it up in lights forever so that part of me never dies." But she has been hard at work on her upcoming project, an album that is inspired by her experiences with heartbreak and moving into a new city. "I wrote a record about it, all of it, so much more than what I've written down here, and I'm in new york getting it done," she continued in the letter. "this record - well, this one is about what comes next."

While a new Lorde record is long overdue, fans wishing for any immediate releases might have to wait a little while longer. "The big day is not tomorrow, or even next month realistically, but soon. I know you understand," the "Team" songstress said. "The party is about to start. I am about to show you the new world."
