Dead or Alive was formed by Burns in 1980. Its breakout 1985 single, "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)," hit No. 1 in the U.K. and No. 11 on the U.S. Billboard chart. The song became a fixture of many dance club playlists.

Later in his career, Burns appeared on "Celebrity Big Brother" as well as several shows where he discussed his cosmetic surgery, including "Pete Burns' Cosmetic Surgery Nightmares" and "The Body Shocking Show."

He was married to Lynne Corlett until 2006, and later Michael Simpson, both of whom signed the death announcement.
