"The responsibility of playing a real person is an enormous [undertaking] and you want to get it right," Paulson said of portraying the former prosecutor, who was also Paulson's date for the night.

"The real Marcia: The complicated, whip-smart mother of two who woke up every day, put two feet on the floor and dedicated herself [to defending the law]," Paulson exclaimed as Clark looked on with tears in her eyes.

Paulson then called herself -- and the rest of society -- "superficial and careless" for passing judgment on Clark based on the "two-dimensional" portrayals of the prosecutor that dominated the media during the Trial of the Century. "I'm sorry."

Paulson also called out her costars as "magicians" and the creator of the series, Ryan Murphy, of whom she said, "It was because you thought I could that I even dared."

Closing out her acceptance speech, Paulson called out her girlfriend, actress Holland Taylor, with a sweet proclamation that garnered cheers from the audience: "Holland Taylor, I love you!"
