Alicia Keys: Going makeup-free is a metaphor for finding yourself

Alicia Keys has a lot in the works right now, like finishing her upcoming as-yet-untitled album and settling into her new role as a coach on NBC's The Voice. Though neither of those projects are what has landed her in the spotlight as of late. Rather, the focus has been on her choice to be a bare-faced beauty.

The multi-talented artist debuted the look at the MTV Video Music Awards last weekend and showed off the same au naturel look when she performed Friday (Sept. 2) on Today. Following her performance, she spoke with Savannah Guthrie regarding the decision to not wear makeup, a choice she says is empowering.

Swizz Beatz Defends Alicia Keys After Makeup-Free VMAs Appearance

"We put so many limitations on ourselves," Keys says. "We put limitations on each other, society puts limitations on us, and in a lot of ways, I'm of it -- I'm over it."

She continues to say how amazing it would be for everyone to embrace one another as they are. "Just be yourself and have a great time," the singer says. "Do what makes you feel good as opposed to trying to please every damn body."

And while the intention isn't to inspire a makeup-free movement by any means, Keys' boldness did cause Today anchor Tamron Hall to give the look a try.
