How Doris Day May Have Saved Her Son From Being a Charles Manson Victim

While America's sweetheart Doris Day is regarded as an accomplished actor and singer, her "mother's intuition" was perhaps her most treasured talent when she single-handedly saved her son from one of the most notorious murderers of all time.

Good Vibrations, a book from Mike Love of The Beach Boys, tells of a friendship between Day's son, late record producer Terry Melcher, and Charles Manson, who were introduced by fellow Beach Boy, Dennis Wilson.

The trio, Melcher, Manson and Wilson, were often spotted together in various club outings.

Manson apparently had an interest in a music career, but even after a lengthy discussion, Day's son Melcher decided he wouldn't support that path in his career.

The memoir recalled, "Manson wouldn't stand for it."

Love speculated it may have been one of the moments Manson became enraged with "a corrupt society" and sought his revenge.

He recalls confiding in his actress mother about Manson's "scary antics, his brandishing of knives, his zombie followers."

Love even told her that Manson had even once visited their rental home on Ceilo Drive, in Benedict Canyon, California. As any protective mother, Day demanded he move out.

Seven months later, in August of 1969, Manson and his followers went on to kill 8-months-pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four other people at that very home on Ceilo Drive. Then, they killed two additional victims the next night a few miles away.

The Manson Family continued their killing streak over the next five weeks after Manson convinced his followers of an apocalyptic race war in which he and his disciples had to come out on top.

"The move was no accident. Terry, Doris' only child, was extremely close to his mom," Love wrote in his memoir.

Melcher, who may have been rescued from a similar fate as Manson's victims, continued his career in music until he passed away at 62 from skin cancer.

Manson, now 82, was later convicted and is currently serving nine concurrent life sentences at Corcoran State Prison in California.
