The 9 most iconic Britney Spears moments

Britney Spears is set to perform at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards — but can she top these iconic performances?

1. "Mickey Mouse Club" days (1993)

Britney's stardom began at age 8 alongside a budding Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Ryan Gosling.

2. "...Baby One More Time" video (1998)

Her first music video changed the course of pop music forever, altered how we view the schoolgirl outfit and made Britney Spears a music icon.

3. "Rolling Stone" cover (1999)

This controversial cover featured a 17-year-old Britney turned sex symbol in lingerie and co-starred a Teletubby.

4. Justin Timberlake years (1999-2002)

This short-lived relationship remains the best of teen pop royalty and created an unforgettable red carpet look that can only be described as denim.

5. "Oops!... I Did It Again" video (2000)

This video proved Britney was much more than a one-hit wonder and made us all want a red jumpsuit.

6. The Snake Performance (2001)

The name of the albino Burmese Python from Britney's "Slave 4 U" VMA performance was Banana.

7. "Toxic" video (2003)

This release set a new standard for music videos and features Britney wearing nothing but diamonds.

8. Madonna kiss (2003)

When Britney, Christina Aguilera and Madonna began their surprise performance at the VMAs, it didn't seem like the moment could get any better... until the pop queen planted a kiss on the pop princess.

9. "Womanizer" comeback (2008)

After having a public meltdown, Britney dropped comeback single "Womanizer" and released her "Circus" album, proving she wasn't just stuck in the '90s.
