Malia Obama breaks into tears during her father's farewell speech

Updated

President Barack Obama's eldest daughter, Malia Obama, choked up Tuesday night as her father delivered his farewell address.

The 18 year old, who was sitting with her mother, shed a few tears as the president addressed her personally.

It's no wonder Malia was emotional, as her father offered nothing but praise to his girls.

"Malia and Sasha, under the strangest of circumstances, you have become two amazing young women, smart and beautiful, but more importantly, kind and thoughtful and full of passion," he said. "You wore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily. Of all that I've done in my life, I'm most proud to be your dad. "

Malia's sister, 15-year-old Sasha Obama, was notably missing.

The first lady, Michelle Obama, remained stoic during the speech, even when her husband wiped a tear from his eye. She delivered her final address in her position at the White House on Jan. 6.

There, she choked up a bit as she told young people not to be afraid of what is to come.

The president called his wife his best friend, adding that because of her, a new generation has a role model.

"You took on a role you didn't ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humor," he said.
