BAFTA film award nominations: 'La La Land' leads race

Damien Chazelle's musical "La La Land" led the race for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' movie awards after nominations were announced Tuesday at the organization's headquarters in Central London.

"La La Land" was nominated in 11 categories, while Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi drama "Arrival" and Tom Ford's psychological thriller "Nocturnal Animals" both received nine, and Kenneth Lonergan's family tragedy drama "Manchester by the Sea" had six.

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," "Hacksaw Ridge," "Lion" and "I, Daniel Blake" took five nominations each. "Moonlight" and "Florence Foster Jenkins" were nominated four times.

In major categories, it was "La La Land" and "Manchester by the Sea" that were ahead, with "Arrival," "Nocturnal Animals," "Moonlight" and "I, Daniel Blake" close behind.

Clint Eastwood's "Sully" and Martin Scorsese's "Silence" both came away empty-handed.

Speaking to Variety, BAFTA's chief executive Amanda Berry underscored the eclectic nature of the selection, with the best film category illustrating this with Ken Loach's gritty social-realist drama "I, Daniel Blake" rubbing shoulders with Chazelle's playful musical "La La Land," and Villeneuve's entertaining tale of alien encounters, "Arrival."

Berry sees the awards as, in part, a means to draw attention to the diversity of filmmaking on offer. "We are a small organization with a big influence," she said.

"Anything that gets people talking about films, wanting to go and see films, discovering a director whose work they haven't seen before, or seeing people who are nominated for the first time, and then becoming fans of their work, has to be a good thing."

Berry pointed out the range in experience and awards recognition of the nominees. She was pleased to see six first-time nominees in the acting categories, for example, including those who have been in the industry for some time, such as "La La Land's" Ryan Gosling and "Moonlight's" Naomie Harris, and those relatively new to industry, like Hayley Squires in "I, Daniel Blake." There are also those who have had multiple nominations in the past, like Nicole Kidman in "Lion," and Meryl Streep in "Florence Foster Jenkins."

U.K. distributors have observed a sweet-spot in terms of revenue, both in the theatrical and home-entertainment spheres, following the nominations. "When there are so many films released awards recognition has to help a film in terms of its profile and appeal," Berry said.

"La La Land" and "Manchester by the Sea" both open this week in the U.K., and Chazelle's pic in particular, with its stellar nominations tally, is likely to receive a boost from the buzz. "We are shining a very bright spotlight on that film, and people are talking about it," she said.

The nominations were announced by "Game of Thrones" actress Sophie Turner and "Preacher" star Dominic Cooper. The awards ceremony, hosted by Stephen Fry, will take place Feb. 12 at London's Royal Albert Hall.
