Rome's 'ugly' Christmas tree gets a makeover

Families worldwide are getting into the Christmas spirit. While everything is decorated beautifully and presents are starting to collect beneath the tree, Rome's display of holiday cheer is another story.

Rome lit its Christmas tree in Piazza Venezia last week. Unfortunately, it has been dubbed the "saddest tree" in the world by a Twitter user.

Illuminated by the Mayor on Thursday, December 8, The Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception -- marking, for many Italians, the start of the holiday season -- this tree did not give the iconic Rockefeller Center Tree a run for its money whatsoever.

Standing tall with missing limbs and draping lights, the dreary-looking tree disappointed many, with some blaming the city for being cheap and cutting costs by having the tree donated.

After hundreds of complaints, it looks like Rome listened and gave their tree a nice holiday makeover. It even got a bright shining star to finish off the updated trimmings.
