A 'How I Met Your Mother' female spinoff, 'How I Met Your Father,' is happening

This news is legen...

...wait for it...

...dary! Legendary.

After a spectacularly depressing series finale, it seemed like How I Met Your Mother fans weren't going to get anything they wanted, much like Ted during that episode that takes place every three years and you realize he isn't fulfilling his dreams and oh wait now we're crying, please make it stop. But lo, the gods of television have smiled upon us! News broke today (December 15) that, as Variety reports, This Is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are writing the script for a spinoff, How I Met Your Father, for 20th Century Fox. (Note: This doesn't mean that the new series would air on Fox, necessarily; it could potentially go to any network.)

If you think this sounds kind of familiar that's because it is: A How I Met Your Mother spinoff series, How I Met Your Dad, was attempted in 2014. The show had Greta Gerwig set to star, Meg Ryan as the narrator, and even made it to pilot—but there were creative differences with CBS and the project eventually fizzled.

Still, we have high hopes for this latest version. The original creators of HIMYM, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, will also be executive producing the new show, which will use the same telling-a-story voiceover device as the original series. To be clear: It's not the story of how Tracy met Ted, told from her perspective; this is an entirely new love story and a new group of friends. Which is probably for the best. We do, however, ask that the Ducky Tie make an appearance?

This Is Us plus How I Met Your Mother? We can't handle these damn feelings, guys!
