Kelly Clarkson found out about her Grammy nomination live on air and it was priceless

Kelly Clarkson got a lovely surprise while up early for a radio show on Tuesday morning (Dec. 6). When the singer was paying a visit to SiriusXM's Morning Mashup, she didn't realize it was during the same time that the 2017 Grammy nominations were announced -- nor that she had actually received a nod herself.

"We just got some breaking news in here," the host told Clarkson. "Did you know you're nominated for a Grammy?"

Considering that Clarkson's album Piece By Piece came out in early 2015 (and received a couple of nominations at the 2016 awards), she was completely caught off guard by the news. But once she realized her American Idol performance version of "Piece By Piece" was eligible, her reaction was absolutely priceless.

So what's the trick to getting a nomination?

"You just have to cry on national television," she laughed. "Apparently people are into that."

Clarkson was nominated in the same category last year for her Piece By Piece track "Heartbeat Song," as well as receiving another nod for Best Pop Vocal Album. Neither of those took home the hardware, but her emotional rendition of "Piece By Piece" may just make up for that.

The track is up against Adele's "Hello," Beyonce's "Hold Up," Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" and Ariana Grande's "Dangerous Woman." This marks Clarkson's thirteenth nomination, and would be her fourth Grammy if she wins.
