Police chief: Christmas festivities may have sparked San Bernardino attack

Authorities in San Bernardino say a mandatory work meeting held in a room filled with Christmas decorations may have been one of the triggers of the attack Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik instigated nearly one year ago, on December 2, 2015.

On a recent episode of the ABC News program "Nightline," the city's police chief Jarrod Burguan, states about Malik, "She had essentially made the statement in an online account that she didn't think that a Muslim should have to participate in a non-Muslim holiday or event."

He goes on to say, "And you could clearly see from pictures inside that room that there was somewhat of a festive atmosphere so it had those Christmas overtones to it. That really is one of the very, very few pieces of potential evidence that we have that we can truly point to and say, 'that possibly is a motive in this case.'"

The program, in fact, shows a picture of Farook with co-workers in front of a Christmas tree.

The Los Angeles Times reports that despite an effort which includes hundreds of pieces of evidence, investigators still don't have a clear picture as to who else may have been involved in the plot.

The couple killed 14 people at the Inland Regional Center on December 2 before dying in a shootout with police hours later.
