Homeopathic kids' products recalled

Raritan Pharmaceuticals has issued a recall of homeopathic kids' products that contain belladonna extract, which can be deadly if consumed in large doses, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Belladonna is a chemical found in the deadly nightshade plant.

Recalled products include CVS Homeopathic Infants' Teething Tablets, Kids Relief Homeopathic Ear Relief Oral Liquid and CVS Homeopathic Kids' Ear Relief Liquid, which are sold all over the U.S.

Sushant Pradhan, a spokesperson Raritan Pharmaceuticals, told CNN the recall is precautionary -- there have been no reports of direct harm to consumers.

He said the recalled products contain only about a nanogram of belladonna, which is "not toxic to anybody," but he noted that the company has not received test results from the FDA.

Earlier this fall, the FDA warned against homeopathic teething tablets and gels after 10 deaths were reported.

Though officials aren't positive about the cause of those deaths, the FDA suggested those products had harmful amounts of belladonna.

Seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy and excessive sleepiness are symptoms of belladonna poisoning, according to the agency.

The FDA warned that belladonna amounts that are inconsistently labeled on treatments can expose unsuspecting people to dangerous doses of the chemical.

After the agency released the warning, CVS and Walgreens withdrew the tablets and gels -- but products were not official recalled before now, according to CNN.

Pradhan told CNN there can be a wide range of belladonna levels across homeopathic treatments other than the ones that were recently recalled.

The toxin can be found in homeopathic eye drops and as a cure for an upset stomach.

"This is not your typical medicine," Pradhan told CNN.

People who use homeopathic treatments may be seeking a more natural remedy than they could find with modern medicine, but those who seek alternative cures risk lower standards of regulation.

The FDA advises that people stop using the recalled products, and consult a doctor if any health problems occur.
