Q&A: Russell Wilson talks personal grooming, superstitions and the rest of the NFL season

Over recent weeks, Braun launched its new campaign, Morning By Design -- about the importance of a man's morning routine, because what you do every morning sets up your day. This topic hits home for Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson – whether he's traveling, waking up on game day, or heading to practice, he relies on his morning routine to help him perform throughout the day, so it's important that every detail is right – and grooming plays a key role.

How did you first get involved with Braun?

I've had a lot of great relationships with great companies, and Braun is one of them for sure. The collaboration we have -- I'm a big, big preparation person, so to be able to wake up in the morning and start a new day nice and fresh, and to be able to have a nice, fresh shave, it's authentic for me. Sometimes I do have facial hair, but when I do, I keep it nice and clean and ready to roll. Sometimes I'm freshly shaven all the way down to my skin.

I think, for me, it's really a winning mindset. Whether it's going to work, going to football practice or a football game on a Sunday morning, or going into a big business meeting with Fortune 500 companies or whoever, no matter what the circumstances are, even if it's going on a hot date night, just being able to be freshly groomed is really important.

Are you superstitious at all when it comes to shaving?

I'm not superstitious at all (laughs). I think that, more so, it's a great habit. That's one of the habits that I have: To be able to keep myself freshly shaven or freshly groomed. I don't freak out if I can't have all my facial hair off -- it's okay. I think being freshly groomed, though, is important.

What is your morning routine like?

I have a very detailed morning routine. Obviously, getting ready for practice throughout the week, and getting ready for games, I get up super early. I always say there's no time to sleep. So what I do is I get up super early, then take a nice shower to wake up, brush my teeth, face myself in the mirror and get a nice shave or a nice groom. At the beginning of each day, you get excited for the next opportunity you have for that day -- whatever that opportunity may be. Whether it's a game, a practice, or a meeting with a Fortune 500 company or a big interview you may have. It's all for a great cause. I'm able to do a lot of stuff with Seattle Children's, and different hospitals around the country.

I'm able to impact and encourage young kids to have that same mindset, that winning mindset, of being able to approach everyday as a new day, not matter how good the day before was. If you can have that mindset of approaching every day as a new day, it gives you a great chance of being successful.

The NFC is wide open -- being on top of the division, despite a few bumps along the way, how confident are you in what you guys can accomplish this year?

That really comes down to playing one game at a time. There's nothing bigger than that. Every game is a championship opportunity, and you take every new challenge and every new game as what it is. Our mindset is to hopefully go 1-0 every week, and to take it one game at a time. That's how we keep it simple and keep our mind clear about the task at hand is, and when we get to the end of the season, we get to see how well we did and what we were able to accomplish.
