'Mike Pence' is making a ton of donations to Planned Parenthood

In the aftermath of Donald Trump's surprise election, people are donating to Planned Parenthood, in fears that the conservative new administration will cut or eliminate funding for women's health. And, to add a twist of poetic justice, many giving under the name Mike Pence, so that the ultra-conservative vice president-elect will be sent certificates of thanks.

"We've seen an unprecedented outpouring support over the past few days, with over 128,000 people who have donated to make sure access to health care is protected," wrote Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, in a statement to Vocativ. "The truth is that the majority of Americans, including Trump's own voters, support access to health care at Planned Parenthood and do not want to see women lose access to safe, legal abortion."

The call to not just donate, but make those donations in the name of Mike Pence, took root with some celebrity backing. Bethany Cosentino of the band Best Coast, who has spoken about reproductive rights in the context of this election. She shared an Instagram post on Friday that read, "You can make a donation to Planned Parenthood under Mike Pence's name and he'll receive the certificate of donation...I am just saying." Comedian Amy Schumer and actress Amber Tamblyn also shared their donations on social media.

As governor of Indiana, newly elected VP Mike Pence had one of the most aggressively anti-choice records. He cut off funding to Planned Parenthood in his state and enacted a slew of anti abortion members, including a measure that would require women to pay for funerals for terminated fetuses (it was blocked in court).

Birth control is currently covered under Obamacare, but the president-elect has made it clear he intends to change this and to elect only anti-abortion justices to the Supreme Court. However, Planned Parenthood has expressed optimism, posting on Twitter that they are blown away by the outpouring of donations. "The truth is that the majority of Americans, including Trump's own voters, support access to health care at Planned Parenthood and do not want to see women lose access to safe, legal abortion," Richards said. "These doors stay open, no matter what."
