What are the swing states?

Q: What are the swing states?

A: Swing states -- which is the insider phrase used to describe states in which either a Democrat or a Republican has a chance of winning a majority of votes -- vary from year to year as demographics change. A handful, including Florida and Ohio, have been consistently close over the last few election cycles. In recent years, North Carolina and Virginia have become increasingly contentious. This year, states that have traditionally voted for Republicans are leaning into the "toss up" category, including Georgia and North Carolina.
