Elephants smash pumpkins in annual Halloween kickoff

It wasn't exactly a "Monster Mash" this Halloween weekend at the Oregon Zoo, but what several animals did to honor the spooky day would have made these guys proud.

The zoo's elephants pummeled a pair of gigantic pumpkins as part of the Squishing of the Squash, the annual kickoff or stomp-off to the zoo's Halloween celebration.

Even the thousand pound pumpkins were no match for the elephants.

Zoo officials say the pumpkin-smashing session is part of an enrichment program to keep the animals mentally and physically stimulated.

Getting to eat what's inside kept them busy, too.

But the elephants weren't the only zoo animals that got to horse around.

Earlier this week, the zoo posted a video showing giraffes, otters and black bears devouring their own pumpkins.

What a treat for everyone!
