Clinton backer linked to supporting campaign of FBI email investigator's wife

Updated

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has long been a supporter of the Clintons and, as such, is being called into question over his financial involvement in a recent state Senatorial election.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Mr. McAuliffe has been linked to hundreds of thousands of dollars given to the campaign of Dr. Jill McCabe, wife of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

Mr. McCabe oversaw the 2016 probe into Hillary Clinton's emails.

A spokesperson for the governor told the Wall Street Journal that he, "...supported Jill McCabe because he believed she would be a good state senator. This is a customary practice for Virginia governors..." and called the insinuations, "ridiculous."

The FBI is denying impropriety on the part of Mr. McCabe, saying he reported the relationship as a potential conflict of interest and refrained from becoming involved in his wife's campaign.

Notably, Dr. McCabe's political bid was unsuccessful, and the seat was won by the incumbent.
