American women aren't buying jeans online anymore -- they're switching to this staple instead

Fall weather is upon us, and whether or not your region is still experiencing a slew of warm, summer weather, the air just feels different.

Of course with this comes the inevitable change in wardrobe, and if you're a woman, this means swapping out summer skirts and dresses to longer bottoms – namely, a classic pair of blue jeans.

But this year, it looks like the American staple is being replaced by another cool weather go-to: leggings.

E-commerce analysis firm Slice Intelligence found that online leggings orders have grown a whopping 41 percent in the past year while jeans have only seen a measly 3 percent increase in online sales year over year.

Geographically, South Dakota and New Jersey are the most popular states for leggings ordering, while Idaho and Wyoming are the two states with women purchasing the most denim online.

Though online denim generated 48 percent more revenue overall than leggings, it's important to note that women are spending an average of $62 per pair on jeans, while leggings usually cost half of that.

And where exactly online are women going for these fall basics?

For leggings, Amazon is the top retailer this year, while Jeans are most popularly purchased online at Nordstrom.
