Mayor resigns after posting racist comments about Obama on Facebook

At the end of September, council members in West York, Pennsylvania called for Mayor Charles Wasko to resign after posting racist photos on Facebook. On Monday, the town council accepted Wasko's resignation.

He spoke out to his local ABC affiliate, saying that this is distracting from a bigger issue. "There's no checks and balances up there in that council. When I ran for Council, I told the people, 'I will work with Council, but I will not put up with their [expletive]," he said.

He admitted to the racist posts, but did not apologize. One image portrayed lynching. Another showed a family of apes with the caption, "Aww ... moving day at the White House finally arrived."

Shawn Mauck, Democratic Council President, will take over as mayor. "I think Mayor Wasko missed a golden opportunity," he said. "He could have come out and apologized, and that would have been a signature move forward."

Mauck hopes West York can move on from this controversy and that the community can heal.
