Playing the Man of Steel in the second season of the hit series "Supergirl" has its own perks – and challenges.

Just ask Tyler Hoechlin, who suits up as Clark Kent/Superman.

"It felt like the nicest Halloween costume I'd ever had, and the most expensive," he says.

But there are inherent, ahem, issues involved. "Yes, going to the bathroom in that suit is an adventure. You really hope that situation doesn't occur when you're working that day," says Hoechlin.

The California-born actor has starred in "Road to Perdition" and Richard Linklater's buoyant comedy "Everybody Wants Some!!" And as E.L. James fans know, Hoechlin plays author Boyce Fox in "Fifty Shades Darker," the sequel to "Fifty Shades of Grey," opposite Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. So, what he can say about the feel of the movie?

"They're the vibes of the next 'Fifty Shades' movies. They're very 'Fifty Shades' vibes. That's all I can say. That's it. Otherwise I just don't work again and I'd like to keep my job," he teases.

Speaking of jobs, playing Superman was a career and personal highlight for Hoechlin.

"I went back to the gym and I started eating a lot more. It was my favorite diet ever. I ate anything I could whenever I could. A lot of Chinese, a lot of pizza. I was working out and trying to bulk up," he says.

But in real life, "I'm as dorky and nerdy as Clark – much more than his alter ego."
