CEO is encouraging employees to vote in a unique way

Talk about rockin' the vote!

Lanie List, founder and CEO of Lovely Bride, is encouraging her employees to vote on Nov. 8 by offering paid time off -- and she wants all business owners to do the same.

Small business owners and employees are arguably the most impacted by decisions made in Washington -- and their voices should be heard come Election Day. Unfortunately for small business workers, it can also be the most difficult for them to make it to the polls.

That's why List launched Election Day with Pay, a new campaign inviting companies to join her in the pledge to allow empower employees to exercise their right to vote -- and even affect the outcome of the election.

Why is this issue so important to you?

There is a pretty deep divide between the presidential candidates, and it's more critical than ever that young people are better enabled to vote since they will have to live with the aftermath.

In addition to PTO, do you think you/your company encourage your employees to vote in other ways?

We've realized that it is important to help our employees register to vote if they aren't already. Vote.org makes it super easy to do - in less than 2 minutes you can register or check your registration status. Especially in New York, where people move quite often, it is important to remind everyone to update their registration address. We also keep conversations about politics in our office very friendly and open. It is essential to create an ongoing dialog so everyone is motivated to participate and get informed on the issues.

You're targeting small businesses, but do you think all businesses, including publicly-traded ones, should do the same?

I definitely think PTO for election day should be enacted at all companies. As an owner of small company myself, i know entrepreneurs have the greatest ability to be nimble and write our own destiny. I know it's late in the game for large companies, but I've reached out to some public company business contacts and they are definitely taking the idea to their boards. We have targeted both large and small companies, so let's see what happens!

Why do you think this is extra important this election?

The world is watching us, and as a global leader, the decision we make in this election not only affects this country, but our relations with all countries.

What else can companies do to encourage employees to vote?

It's really just time that people need. If employers can't afford to give PTO, if they can even adjust the work hours so that employees have ample amount of time to get to the polling stations and back.

Should election day be a national holiday?

Without question -- 100 percent.
