NBA star gave up his entire career to care for his pregnant wife diagnosed with brain tumor

Last month, New Orleans Pelicans star Jrue Holiday stepped away from the game he loves for something he loves a lot more -- his family.

His wife, former U.S. women's soccer star Lauren Holiday, was diagnosed with a brain tumor while pregnant. Her treatment was delayed until she could safely deliver the baby.

Last week, Lauren delivered a healthy baby girl.

Jrue told the NBA he needed to leave to take care of Lauren upon the news of her initial diagnosis. Now, he has indefinitely removed himself from the league while he fully devotes himself to his family.

Lauren will undergo brain surgery in approximately six weeks.

"Having Jrue there for support is very important," said Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry. "In our case, we told Jrue to forget about the basketball part of it. This is where you take care of your family. We're going to welcome him back whenever he feels that it's time to come back, and his family is in good hands."

Lauren, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, scored a goal in the final of the Women's World Cup in 2015 before retiring from the sport. Her and Jrue live in New Orleans, but will spend the next few months in North Carolina to be closer to her doctors.

New Orleans Pelicans forward Quincy Pondexter was among a few of Jrue's teammates who have already visited the Holiday family in North Carolina.

"To see him and the spirits that he was in, it really made me that much more of a fan of his, because he and his wife are handling it really well," Pondexter said. "He and his wife are amazing people. If you've got a chance to say a prayer for them, please do."
