Pope Francis advises US voters to 'choose in conscience'

Updated

While returning from Azerbaijan, Pope Francis was asked on Sunday by a reporter to weigh in on the presidential election in the United States.

After declining to make specific comments regarding the candidates, the pope offered a general advice, "Study the proposals well, pray and choose in conscience."

He also noted, "People say 'I'm from this party' or 'I'm from that party,' but effectively, they don't have clear thoughts about the basics, about proposals."

One such political proposition Pope Francis has made a pointed comment about is the wall Trump intends to build along the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to Reuters, when visiting Mexico last February, the pope asserted that any person who would suggest doing such a thing is, "not Christian."
