Teacher to donate kidney to 4-year-old student

Parents all hope that their children's teachers will care about them, but this teacher certainly went above and beyond.

Lyla Carreyn was diagnosed with Microscopic Polyangiitis in October 2015; the disease causes organ failure. "When doctors tried to perform a biopsy to determine why Lyla's kidneys had failed, Lyla's lungs started hemorrhaging uncontrollably," her mother, Dena Carreyn, said.

Since then, her family has been looking for a kidney donor for the 4-year-old. They found one completely unexpectedly: Lyla's preschool teacher, Beth Battista.

Battista revealed the news to the family with a note, saying, "I may just be her teacher now, but soon a little piece of me will be with Lyla forever. I'm Lyla's kidney donor." Carreyn posted the touching reveal to Facebook:

Carreyn wrote, "Many people think teachers are heroes. Beth Battista is more than our hero; she is our miracle."

The transplant is set to take place in February. The Facebook post has gone viral, generating hundreds of likes and comments. Battista hopes her good deed inspires others to donate, as well. "I have been given the gift of being able to be a living organ donor. Sharing this story with you all will hopefully not just save one life but many more," she said.
