Having a happy spouse may be good for your overall health, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

They're more fit, feel better and are less physically impaired than those married to a downer.

Researchers looked at data from a survey of 1,981 heterosexual couples over 50.

Participants rated their own happiness, health and physical activity and life satisfaction over a six-year period.

The study's data shows people with a happy partner are 34 percent more likely to be healthy than those married to an unhappy spouse.

The study's author thinks there are 3 reasons why this is.

1. Happy partners are better caretakers.

They'll remind you to take medicine and make sure you're looked after when feeling ill instead of focusing on themselves.

2. Happy partners can help kickstart a healthier lifestyle.

This means exercising, sleeping on a regular schedule and choosing healthier food options.

3. Happy partners are easier to deal with.

Knowing that you won't have to babysit a downer or self-loather will make you happier.

Happy marriage!
