Man confesses to murder that landed his twin brother in prison

In a shocking turn of events, an Illinois man recently testified that he committed the 2003 murder for which his identical twin brother is currently serving a 54-year prison sentence, reports WMAQ.

The slaying in question occurred on Chicago's north side and resulted from a spray of gunfire into a small group.

On Thursday, Karl Smith, who is serving a 99-year sentence for an unrelated incident, told a courtroom, "I'm here to confess to a crime I committed that he was wrongly accused of."

Notably, his twin, Kevin Dugar, has already been incarcerated for over a decade.

The Chicago Tribune reports that prosecutors are dubious of Smith's change of heart, as it comes in the wake of his own conviction being upheld.

Carol Rogala, Assistant State's Attorney, said, "He's got nothing to lose."

It has not yet been determined if Dugar will be granted a new trial.
