North Carolina state and local officials are set to give an update on the violent protests that have broken out in the wake of a fatal police shooting that took the life of a black man.

Officers fatally shot Keith Scott, 43, on Tuesday night after he allegedly refused to drop a handgun. However, his family and a witness to the shooting said Scott was holding a book, not a firearm, reports Reuters.

A peaceful rally that gathered Wednesday night in downtown Charlotte turned violent when protestors started throwing rocks and bottle at officers in riot gear. Protestors smashed windows of vehicles and businesses. Police used rubber bullets, tear gas and pepper spray on the crowd.

After two nights of unrest, a State of Emergency was declared Thursday morning and the National Guard and State Highway Patrol made their way into the state's largest city.

They are scheduled to address the media at 10:30 a.m. in Charlotte.
