Pavillons de Bercy in Paris is stunning and a little bit haunting.

It's accurately described as a "land of adventure, freedom, culture, conviviality and daydream."

Opened by Jean Paul Favand in the 90s, the museum encompasses five different worlds:

1. The Museum of Fairground Arts, a late 19th century look at fairgrounds

2. The Theatre of Marvels, a 'curiosity-cabinet' showcasing old projection techniques

3. The Venetian Rooms, a breathtaking carnival

4. The Greenery Theatre, stunningly beautiful gardens

5. Magic Mirror, an authentic ballroom from the 1920s

Each area of the museum blends antique decor with modernity. Located in 19th century wine warehouses, visitors have to set up a tour in advance since it's rarely open to the public.

Despite this, the museum does see about 200,000 visitors each year.

It's been listed by the french government as a living heritage site because it houses the largest collection of fairground and show objects in Europe.

And it certainly looks like it's worth the trip - a magically, whimsical trip to the past.
