OnlyOnAOL: Why 'Veep' Emmy Winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus wows us

Julia Louis-Dreyfus made history on Sunday, winning her fifth consecutive Emmy for playing foul-mouthed, nakedly-ambitious, habitual also-ran Selina Meyer on HBO's "Veep." Her father passed away two days before the Emmys and Louis-Dreyfus honored him in her emotional, heartfelt speech.

She also nailed it, beauty-wise, thanks to her longtime makeup artist Karen Kawahara. "She really is amazing. It's so great because the character is so opposite of who she is. She really enjoys it and you can tell. She's put a lot into making that show what it is," says Kawahara. "It's sickening, her talent. How does that happen?"

It doesn't hurt that Louis-Dreyfus is incredibly personable and kind in person. And she's loyal to the brands she loves, in this case La Prairie. "The products are so beautiful. They work and she just keeps using them. The makeup, too. They're so pretty. It's nice," says Kawahara.

Her inspiration was the dress. "It was flowy and sheer, I wanted to be a little more romantic. She likes a lot of eyeliner. We went for soft smoky around the eye. It's brown smoky eye. We did some individual lashes. She just looked pretty and fresh without a lot of makeup. Tonight so many people piled on a lot of makeup. When you wear too much, it's aging. Less on her is beautiful," says Kawahara.

Unlike many of her peers, Louis-Dreyfus has left her face alone ("She doesn't do any of that and doesn't need to," says Kawahara), and the proof is in the pudding. She's a vision of elegance and grace, with actual laugh lines. And her beauty routine reflects her aesthetic.

"It was a hot day. Once I do her makeup, I give her a dust of power and I leave it. I like her skin looking dewy and fresh. It holds up. I like her dewy. She looks younger and prettier. She looks amazing," says Kawahara.
