How one Utah man contracted the Zika virus remains a mystery

Experts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have concluded their investigation into an "unusual" case of Zika in Utah, but still do not know how the man, who was exposed to no known means of transmission, contracted the virus.

The man had not traveled to a hotspot, nor had he engaged in sexual intercourse with an infected person.

However, he did care for an elderly "family contact" suffering from a particularly robust and ultimately fatal Zika infection.

The man had close contact (hugging and kissing) with the elderly patient, but according to CDC, "...it is not certain that these types of close contact were the source of transmission."

Further, the roughly dozen other people who had similar contact with the affected person did not get sick.

As part of their research, CDC personnel also took a sampling of local mosquitoes, but determined that neither of the two species connected to the transmission of the Zika virus exist in the area.

While it is a mystery how the man contracted the Zika virus, he did fully recover from it.
