Gary Johnson tops presidential poll of military community

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson is the leading candidate among the military community, according to a new poll.

The former New Mexico governor earned 37 percent in the online poll, with nearly 1,400 votes, including both active-duty and veteran members of the military and their families.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump took 30 percent of the vote, with Hillary Clinton trailing in third with 24 percent.

The Hill reported that the online poll results were released Monday by We Are The Mighty, Doctrine Man, Military OneClick and Got Your 6.

1,399 people participated via SurveyMonkey between September 7 and September 10.

Johnson has generally polled a distant third in national surveys, topping out at around 12 percent. A recent high-profile gaffe on foreign policy hasn't helped his cause. In response to a question about his proposals for fixing the turmoil in the Syrian city of Aleppo, Johnson asked, "And what is Aleppo?"

Johnson later recovered saying that when the U.S. intervenes militarily, "...we end up with a situation that in most cases is not better, and in many cases ends up being worse."
