Preppy athleisure takes center stage in new Tommy x Gigi collection
Gigi Hadid made her debut as a fashion designer this New York Fashion Week, launching the Tommy x Gigi collection in partnership with Tommy Hilfiger.
The supermodel, whose modeling career has landed her a solid place on the list of young and fabulous A-list celebrities, collaborated on the collection with Hilfiger, who served as Hadid's mentor throughout the design process.
For Hilfiger, the collaboration with Hadid was a no-brainer. In an interview with the two of them before the collection debuted at their runway show Friday night, Hilfiger said, "We should not just use a model for a beautiful picture, but we should engage with someone who has her cool sense of being, her unique sense of style and someone who defines today's woman."
Hadid smiled at his comment, clearly flattered to have been taken under the wing of a designer who truly respects her creativity and individuality.

"I really made different pieces for different people's styles," Hadid added. "We went everywhere from vintage to rock and roll, to sporty and hippie-chic. There's kind of something for everyone, I hope."
In terms of Hadid's creative process, Hilfiger took a very hands-off approach. "We basically allowed her to come into her own design studio and do whatever she wanted to do," he said.
"She's a perfectionist," he added, "which I really respect."
As for the designs themselves, the Tommy x Gigi collection is the perfect marriage of preppy chic and edgy athleisure -- Hilfiger refers to it as "cool beyond."
The collection includes oversized sweaters and sweatshirts emblazoned with a minimal take on the Tommy Hilfiger logo, mini dresses in disguise as sports jerseys, sheer bohemian maxi dresses and bandanas galore. In a kind of 'Americana meets Fenty by Rihanna' (a runway show in which Hadid walked during New York Fashion Week last February), the Gigi line is perhaps a more approachable interpretation of the otherwise edgy ensembles we saw for Fall 2016.
So when you're thinking about adding to your fall wardobe, Hilfiger recommends "great jeans, great leather, bomber jackets, and Gigi this and Gigi that" as staples for every woman to have in her closet, and Hadid votes for anything oversized.
