Man illegally floats across border on air mattress to visit his Canadian girlfriend

John Bennett, a 25-year-old and Maine's own Huckleberry Finn, was arrested Wednesday while trying to cross the border into Canada by floating through the water on an air mattress.

He said he was desperate to reach his pregnant Canadian girlfriend and had been turned away at the border because of a mischief charge he was facing in the United States.

He did what had to be done. He threw a plastic inflatable device into the St. Croix River and drifted full speed ahead.

Lawyer Peter Thorn, who's representing the federal Public Prosecution Service of Canada, told CityNews that Bennett's Canadian girlfriend "had an ex-boyfriend who was threatening her, but that hasn't been confirmed by the other party."

Thorn told CityNews that the judge hearing the case said,"Pardon the pun, but it seems to me you wanted to get there, come hell or high water."

Bennett was sentenced to two months in jail.
