OnlyOnAOL: All about Beyonce's angelic transformation

Updated

When Beyonce wanted to go blonde for the VMAs, she called her longtime colorist, Rita Hazan.

"I would say she's your ultimate client. She's so open and creative. She loves to change her hair on a regular basis. She likes to change it up. She loves to play with her hair. She's adventurous. She's very highly into beauty," says Hazan. (Above, see our interview with Beyonce's BFF Kelly Rowland.)

This time, they decided to go brighter all over, and embrace an angelic vibe.

"She was performing and she wanted to do something different. She wanted to change it up and go a little bit lighter. I'm over the dark root and light-end thing. We wanted to do something fresh and bring the highlights to the top. It's a multi-dimensional blonde. The blonde has many more tones in it," says Hazan.

Believe it or not, the whole process took about two hours, from start to finish. Sometimes Beyonce comes to Hazan's salon. "I went (to her house) last time. I can focus better. She has a room for hair and makeup. We're all in the zone together," says Hazan.

What makes Beyonce the vanguard of our time? OK, excuse the pun, but it's because we're all in "Formation" with her. "She's super-creative. I think she follows her gut. She knows her instincts. She's evolving as a human being. She's not afraid," says Hazan.

Hazan expects Beyonce to change things up before too long and she's ready for the call. Here's the thing with Hazan. If you go to her for highlights or lowlights, you'll get the Beyonce treatment.

"This is the key to my color and why clients stay with me a long time. Their hair is healthy and when their hair grows out, it looks good. Depending on what is happening, that's when we'll decide what we'll do. We have conversations about her mood, what she's wearing. I behave this way with all my clients, whether it's Beyonce or Cheryl. She's on a different level because she's on stage so it has to be more dramatic," says Hazan.
