Suspect Takes Off In SUV With 2 Kids Inside While Mom Is In Store

FEDERAL HEIGHTS, Colo. (KDVR) -- A man who police say took a SUV with two kids inside from a parking space outside a Family Dollar store is in custody.

The mother left her 3-year-old and 3-month-old children in the car while she went in to the store at 9410 Federal Blvd. to get water, according to Federal Heights police.

The keys were in the ignition, but police are not sure if the SUV was running.

She saw the suspect, Eric Maestas, getting into her Jeep Cherokee, ran out to stop him, but he pushed her and drove off, officials say.

A Thornton police officer spotted the SUV and started following it on I-25 when the suspect took off, exiting at Thornton Parkway.

He drove into a field near Huron where he ran off. The officer had a K-9 and they went after the suspect, where he brought him into custody.

The children were found okay in the backseat, but were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Police say the suspect was taken to the hospital to treat some cuts.

Police are continuing to investigate.
