Nia Long has been cast in Lifetime's remake of '80s tearjerker "Beaches," Variety has confirmed.

Long will play Hillary, the role originated by Barbara Hershey in the 1988 original, opposite Idina Menzel's CC.

The telepic follows the serendipitous meeting of two youngsters on the Venice Boardwalk, who, though worlds apart in lifestyle, embark on an unexpected and lifelong friendship. CC is an aspiring singer trying to make it in Los Angeles until she is discovered by a director who gives CC her first big shot. Hillary is the daughter of a prominent civil rights lawyer who struggles to find her own destiny. Their friendship — even with its ups and downs — sustains them for decades.

Lifetime's new take on the property is currently in production in Vancouver. The new iteration is executive produced by Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan. Allison Anders directs from a script by Bart Barker and Nikole Beckwith. The movie is produced by A+E Studios and will premiere on Lifetime in 2017.

Long was most recently seen in ABC's "Uncle Buck" and the film "Keanu," which starred Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
