Women are wearing makeup at the Olympics to bust gender stereotypes.

They believe there shouldn't be a distinction between being an athlete and wearing makeup.

U.S. runner Shannon Rowbury wears lipstick during competition in honor of her late grandmother. Rowbury told USA Today that she wants to inspire young women to express themselves.

"You can be a strong, athletic, courageous woman and you can wear lipstick," Rowbury said.

Former Olympic gold medalist, Lindsay Tarpley, has even started a sweatproof line of makeup called Sweat Cosmetics specifically for athletes.

U.S. soccer player Ali Krieger said she would wear makeup for any other job.

"I'm going to work and I want to look good. You're not only representing yourself, but U.S. Soccer."

Krieger points out that soccer is her job and likens her makeup to "war paint".

These athletes have already proven they are the best of the best for them, but for them, it's all about feeling empowered while going for the gold.
