Harley Quinn's origin story might be introduced on Fox's 'Gotham'
While Suicide Squad was a critical failure (albeit a commercial success) for DC Comics, many reviewers agreed that one of the few saving graces of the film was Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn. Now, another DC property wants in on the Harley Quinn buzz for the small screen.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox's Gotham series is interested in introducing the origin stories for Quinn and fellow Suicide Squad member Killer Croc onto the show in future seasons. However, it does come with a catch: the characters in the show would be "proto-versions" of themselves, which means they may be played by different actors.
In Harley's case — if it's an origin story — Gotham would probably cast a younger actor, much like how the show initially portrayed Poison Ivy in its first season (though they aged the character considerably for season three).
"A lot of those [DC Comics] characters, because they're in Suicide Squad, you're not going to be seeing them this season," Gotham executive producer John Stephens said during a panel Monday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "We'll be seeing proto-versions of some of those characters. We'll see a proto Killer Croc version. And we'll be seeing a character, perhaps not this season but in times to come, who can be a forerunner of Harley Quinn which will be fun."
It remains to be seen how the show will pull it off, but considering it's gearing up for a Joker reveal as well, it's certainly as good a time as any.
Gotham returns to Fox for its third season Sept. 19.
