Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump campaigned in the general election battleground state of Florida on Wednesday. The billionaire businessman held a town hall at Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.

The town hall kicked off on the heels of the latest political controversy to dominate headlines -- the ongoing feud between Trump and a slain Muslim soldier's family.

The father of Capt. Humayun Khan gave a powerful speech Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. His father's emotional remarks were hailed as some of the best delivered that week. Khizr Khan appealed to GOP leaders to reject Trump and questioned whether the Republican candidate had ever read the Constitution.

Trump, however, did not agree with some of the shots that were aimed at him. The GOP nominee snapped back at claims he had 'sacrificed nothing' and implied Khan's mother, Ghazala Khan, wasn't allowed to speak during the speech because she is Muslim.

The back and forth continued for days with both parties rebuking the other to different media outlets.

Prominent Republican figures, including Sen. John McCain and Chris Christie, have spoken out, condemning the nominee's remarks. Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, attempted to clear the air after the swift public backlash, saying in a statement "Donald Trump and I believe that Capt. Humayun Khan is an American hero and his family, like all Gold Star families, should be cherished by every American."

Trump also drew outrage from GOP officials on Tuesday when he failed to endorse fellow Republicans up for re-election, including House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Following the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, Trump's approval ratings have dipped in recent polls, while his competitor Hillary Clinton's numbers have spiked.
