Remembering the American Victims of the Nice Terror Attack

A student at the University of California, Berkeley, was confirmed on Sunday to have been the third American killed in a terror attack in Nice, France, last week.

Nicolas Leslie, 20, was in the French port city as part of Cal's Study Abroad program, when he and 83 other people were killed Thursday night when a man plowed a truck into a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks.

He had been unaccounted for since the attack, and his death was relayed to campus officials by the FBI, which was notified by its French officials earlier Sunday, the university said in a statement.

"This is tragic, devastating news," UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said in a statement. "All of us in the UC Berkeley family — both here on campus, and around the world — are heartbroken to learn that another promising young student has been lost to senseless violence. I join Nick's parents, friends and the entire campus community in condemning this horrific attack, and in mourning the loss of one of our own."

Three Berkeley students were also among the 200 injured in the attack, the school said. Vladyslav Kostiuk, a 23-year-old senior computer science major in the College of Letters and Science, suffered a broken leg, and Diane Huang, 20, a senior majoring in environmental economics and policy in the College of Natural Resources, sustained a broken foot.

The Berkeley community was already in mourning following an attack at a restaurant in Bangladesh, on July 2, in which 18-year-old Berkeley sophomore Tarishi Jain was among 20 foreigners killed.

A father and son from Texas were also killed in the attack in Nice.
