5 Reasons Trump Picked Mike Pence as His Running Mate

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump officially announced Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate Friday morning, but according to multiple reports, he wasn't completely sold on the selection mere hours earlier.

While the news of Pence's selection leaked on Thursday afternoon, neither Trump nor his campaign would confirm the news. According to reports from both CNN's Dana Bash and NBC's Kelly O'Donnell, the billionaire was on the phone Thursday evening asking if he could back out of the selection.

Bash elaborated on the report on CNN Friday afternoon, saying, "This is after he offered the job to Mike Pence, and they flew him to New York, and they had him sitting in a hotel room in Manhattan thinking he is going to be the vice presidential pick and he just basically dumped his own plans for reelection in Indiana as governor."

Trump told FOX News' Greta Van Susteren Thursday evening, "I haven't made a final, final decision." He later postponed an official event to announce Pence as his running mate.

The New York Times cautioned after the leak Thursday that some Republicans believed "the party's mercurial presidential candidate may still backtrack on his apparent choice."

The news has some in the media questioning if the initial leak of Pence's selection was a ploy by one faction of the campaign in an attempt to force Trump's hand.
