Cailee Rae is changing relationship songs for the better

Updated

Relationship songs are plentiful in the pop space. Whether it's about break ups or first loves, the genre can often feel like a saturated market. So when artists attempt to break into that space, one thing is certain: their spin has to be unique.

Cailee Rae, the sixteen year old Instagram singing sensation, has done just that. Her single "Anchor" off of her debut EP "Overthinkng" captures a fallen relationship in a way many songs can't. Rae focuses on the complexities and emotional repercussions of someone quite literally holding you down. "Anchor" is about breaking through that mental and physical rut and feeling empowered by yourself.

The relatable narrative isn't just our favorite song on "Overthinking," it's also Cailee's. "I've never connected to a song in the way that I connected with "Anchor," she tells AOL.com.

We recently spoke to the singer/songwriter about what went into making "Anchor" and why it differs so much from her other original work. Ahead, find out more about her creative process, what she hopes listeners will take away from her newest single, and more!

Take us behind the scenes of your creative process -- how does on of your songs come to life?
Every song is different. But all of them really just goes off of an idea. I'll sit on the piano and start playing something. I'll start on the chords and it really is just about feeling the vibes. You just know what type of the lyrics the song will be based on the chords and sometimes that's how I start writing. Other times, it's based off of stories. I have a wild imagination and I love to create stories and fairytales. Sometimes I'll create stories based off of what I saw in a movie or something I saw in the streets from people watching. I'll write off of that and that's more of the situation where the words are followed by chords. Other times I'll do a free-write, which is one of my favorite methods. I think that a lot of the time people think that the most intimidating part of songwriting is figuring out who to rhyme or choose words for a song. Free-writing destroys that barrier that affects people's writing. The process makes sure people aren't minimizing their creativity or sticking to their pre-conceived notions. You just type whatever comes to mind. And for me, that's where the most honest songs come from.

How did you create "Anchor"?
I've never connected to a song in the way that I connected with "Anchor." And I think that's because it has a really strong message to me. I wrote it with one of my best friends and we co-write a lot. We were messing around and I gave him this line and said, "You were poison from the start. We had a love just like the movies, put a spell right on my heart." We started writing and all of a sudden a really powerful song came out. I never have recorded a song so fast in the studio before. I literally went in and it was the first song I recorded during my first week of recording "Overthinking." I wanted to do Anchor first because I was really nervous and we literally knocked it out so fast and then the day was just over. When you connect with a song it's not like you have to do it over and over. You sing it once and that was perfect. I remember doing it with that song. Every lyric was so powerful and so different. It was so fun to write too because everyone goes through that time in their life when something is holding them down. Whether it's a person or a situation, everyone goes through that moment when you realize you have to let whatever is holding you down go. So I think that song was easily written. It was definitely one of my favorites so far.

What you hope listeners will take out hearing "Anchor?"
I want them to take empowerment from it. I think that everyone has that moment when they forget that they're strong enough to help themselves. I think a lot of people find themselves in that pickle where they're down and don't think they can get up. I want them to listen to that song and then feel strong enough to find that power within themselves and the strength that everyone has inside of them to get over whatever is happening to them. Or even see what's happening to them; so many times in my life Ive been blind to what's happening around me. And I would listen to a Taylor Swift song or an Ed Sheeran song and think "Maybe that's what's up with me." I want people to find themselves through that song.
