The NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research recently shared footage documenting what is believed to be the first known sighting of a living Aphyonidae.

The translucent fish, which resembles an eel in shape, was spotted casually swimming in the waters of the Mariana Islands.

Its eyes are among its many notable characteristics, as they appear deeply recessed and, like the sea dwellers body, lack pigment.

Some interns with the Okeanos Explorer team noted the fish bears a striking resemblance to Falkor, the dragon from "The Neverending Story."
