Suge Knight Suing Chris Brown for Shooting

Former music mogul Marion "Suge" Knight, who is currently awaiting trial for a murder charge, filed a lawsuit against Chris Brown and Los Angeles nightclub 1 Oak over a 2014 shooting at a party Brown hosted at the venue that left Knight wounded.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses the nightclub and Brown of not taking proper security precautions at the unofficial pre-MTV VMA Awards event, allowing at least one armed person to enter the venue. The suit notes that Brown's parties have a history of seeing violence break out, and also claims the R&B singer has gang ties.

"As a result of the negligence of the defendants, one or more unknown individuals were allowed access to the event with weapons, including firearms," the lawsuit says. "As a foreseeable result, gunshots were fired by those admitted into the event and (Knight) was shot and seriously injured."

Knight was shot seven times at the party, sustaining injuries to his chest, abdomen and left forearm. Though not life-threatening, Knight has cited complications such as blood clots from the injuries in court hearings on an unrelated murder charge.

The attorneys claim that the fear that followed Knight in the months after the shooting caused him to flee when attacked in his car in 2015. Knight ran over two men in the incident, killing one.

The lawsuit asks that the defendants cover medical costs for past and future expenses of Knight's injuries from the 2014 shooting, without naming a specific amount. Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, and 1 Oak did not immediately respond to request for comment on Monday.

Knight, who has been convicted on felony counts twice, was also shot at a party thrown by Kanye West in Miami beach in 2005. Brown has completed probation for his 2009 assault against then-girlfriend Rihanna.

In a brief court appearance Monday Suge Knight said he fired the lawyers handling his murder case. Speaking on his own behalf, he told the judge he's received poor medical treatment while in jail and that he's going blind. His case was transferred to another judge, but Knight had to leave early to receive more treatment. It's the third time he's gone straight from court to the hospital.
