Insect Poop Threatens India's Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is one of India's most cherished tourist attractions, bringing millions of visitors to the site every year.

It's so popular, in fact, that even the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stopped by just last month to pose for some shots with the famous mausoleum.

Unfortunately, tourists aren't the only ones flocking to the site.

Swarms of insects have found their way to the Taj Mahal and are actually endangering it.

According to archaeological experts, insect poop threatens to damage the intricate marble inlay, due to the constant need for daily cleanings.

The catch-22 is that although regular scrubbing can seriously damage the floral mosaics and marble surfaces, the walls can't be left covered in poop all day.

The insect problem is likely linked to the polluted river near the Taj Mahal, which is the perfect breeding ground for a type of elongated fly that resembles a mosquito.

Because the river has gotten so filthy that it can no longer support fish, the mosquito population continues to grow unchecked. Authorities are currently looking for a permanent solution.

The pest control problem is just one of the issues archaeologists are struggling with, in order to preserve the Taj Mahal.

The building also suffers from damage caused by air pollution, which can turn the marble yellow and brown.

With all the environmental factors working against it, you might want to move 'visiting the Taj Mahal' to the top of your bucket list.
