Cannes: Nice airport terminal temporarily evacuated, unattended baggage detonated
The departure area of terminal 1 of the Nice airport, the port of entry for most industry folks arrive for the Cannes film festival, was temporarily evacuated Tuesday due to an unattended piece of luggage.
An airport representative said the closure lasted about 20 minutes, and police came to blow up the item. In France, suspicious packages are always blown up instead of analyzed as authorities don't want to take the risk.
A representative for the Nice Cote d'Azur airport, which has two terminals, said there were no delays due to the detonation.
"#Evacuation at #Nice airport finished after a probably police induced explosion. Smell of explosives inside the airport but everything fine," Twitter user Arash T. Riahi wrote on the social media site.

"Just showed up to Cannes airport and it's shut down," DJ Steve Aoki tweeted. "The airport evacuated hundreds of people from a mysterious package inside."

A Twitter user with the handle nightridevisuals said: "Nice airport in France evacuated due to suspicious packages. They remotely detonated to find they were not a threat thankfully."
Twitter user Papa Kilo said: "Nice airport BA check in area evacuated and cordoned off ... Suspect baggage."
