Although domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, income or other factors, Safehorizon.com reports that as many as 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime.

To raise awareness, a Serbian ad agency created a PSA back in 2013 called "One photo a day in the worst year of my life."

In the short yet poignant clip, a woman takes a selfie every day for a year to document the physical effect of the abuse she endures.

Though the woman looks fine at first, as time goes on, severe bruises appear on her face and neck. At the end, she holds a sign that reads "Help me, I don't know if i will be here tomorrow" in Serbian.

It should be noted that the woman in the video, which amassed more than 56 million views after being shared on Reddit, named Noah Kalina, is not, herself, a victim of abuse -- make-up was used to make the bruises on her face.

Still, makeup or not, the video's message rings loud and clear: Domestic abuse is an epidemic that we cannot afford to sweep under the rug any longer.
