Puppy Found Chained Outside Business With Ears Cut Off, Drenched in Blood

CERES, Calif. (KTXL) -- A brutal mutilation leaves a puppy disfigured, and now a diagnosis of a highly contagious virus has him fighting for his life.

For now, Vitus' home is at the American Pet Clinic in Ceres. But earlier this week, a couple found Vitus, also known as "Holyfield," drenched in blood and chained up on Crows Landing Road in Modesto after someone used scissors to cut off his ears.

Sonia Cano saw the couple in front of her home walking with the traumatized puppy. "I was horrified for him," Cano told FOX40.

She called Kate's Rescue, a no kill animal rescue organization. With the help of a GoFundMe account, the group paid for Vitus' medical costs, but just days after the vicious attack Vitus was diagnosed with Parvo, a potentially fatal virus.

"There is no medicine that can kill Parvo we have to support the dog through all the symptoms we see there's a 70 percent chance they survive," said Dr. Amanpreet Basra of American Pet Clinic.

The puppy has a long road to recovery, but with the help of his new owner, Sonia Cano, Kate's Rescue and the American Pet Clinic, the little guy has a big group rallying behind him.

"Good vibes for him -- we're hoping he pulls through this. It's just been a rough start for him," Cano said.

Kate's Rescue reached its GoFundMe goal for Vitus' treatment costs, but the account is still up. The organization hopes for more donations to help other dogs in need.
