He may not be running for president, but Paul Ryan is playing a big role in Republican politics this year.

House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke out against Donald Trump's suggestion that America's allies should have a stronger financial role in the protective efforts.

"There is a commonality that this has been our problem too long, it shouldn't be our problem any more if we just pull out, we can fortress America and we will be better off. I don't buy that," Ryan said, according to the AP. "The reason I don't buy that is it is going to come to us. Who else is going to help lead the world ... to ultimately extinguish radical Islamic terrorism? And if we just pull back and think our oceans are going to save us, the evidence of the last couple of decades disproves that theory."

This is far from the first time Ryan has disavowed Trump.

But the comments come fresh off of his very public statement that he is not seeking the Republican presidential nomination.

Ryan, who ran as the vice presidential Republican nominee in 2012 along with Mitt Romney, has called Trump out for his statements on Muslim-Americans as well.

The New York Times called out Ryan -- the only elected Republican leader -- for sounding more like Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump.

"I am not a neocon," Ryan said Thursday, according to the Times.

"Who else is going to lead the world to make the global commons more peaceful?" he asked.
